Why Choose Dental Implants?

There are many reasons that dentists recommend dental implants to relieve tooth loss woes. For starters, they look, function, and feel just like real teeth. There are also many reasons why people have the need to replace missing teeth, from sports injuries and accidents to not growing in correctly. Whatever the reason, dental implants can help you regain confidence in your smile and protect your oral health.

While there are a couple of solutions for replacing missing teeth, implants remain the most popular. A bridge, which is made up of two or more crowns on either side of the missing tooth, is a traditional solution, too. Dentures may also be required if you are missing several teeth. However, dentists usually recommend implants because they can be a lifelong solution.

So what exactly is an implant?

It starts with a small titanium screw placed directly into your jawbone where the root of the missing tooth use to be.. During the healing period this will integrate with the bone, becoming a permanent bond. Once this is complete a crown will be attached that will be indistinguishable from your natural teeth.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

  • Within the first year of tooth loss the bone volume starts to shrink and is reabsorbed into the body causing a sunken look in the face. Implants can prevent this and help you maintain a youthful profile.
  • You can care for them just like natural teeth, which means no fuss.
  • Unlike traditional dentures, implants won’t slip out of place while talking or eating in social situations. Implants are anchored directly to the jawbone, so you avoid any potentially embarrassing situations.
  • Replacing missing teeth with implants can help with any problems associated with chewing properly.
  • Filing down neighboring teeth is often part of bridges, but with implants those teeth are left alone. This helps with your jawbone’s strength and the overall health of your natural teeth.
  • Missing teeth can cause people to stop smiling due to to embarrassment. Replacing them as soon as possible can restore your confidence in each beautiful smile.

What makes a good candidate for dental implants?

With each patient, the process of receiving dental replacements starts with a consultation. We will examine your mouth, jawbone, and gums to determine if you are a good candidate. The good news is that there is no age barrier when it comes to this solution. People of all ages, and with a healthy jawbone, can choose the titanium implant option.

However, there are a few things that may disqualify a patient as a good candidate. Certain diseases and conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes or individuals undergoing radiation or chemotherapy for cancer, mean that you may require some other medical attention before we can replace the tooth.

If you are suffering from tooth loss, schedule a dental implant consultation with us today and start your journey to a healthier dazzling smile.

Why Teeth Whitening In the Office Is So Effective

Teeth whitening procedures done in the office are extremely effective. We use ZOOM! Whitening because it has been repeatedly tested and shown to be completely safe and able to provide results that are up to eight shades brighter. This has made it one of the most common and most requested cosmetic dental procedures.

A great smile can build self-confidence, improve your mood, and make you look younger. There are a lot of benefits to getting the bright, white smile you’ve always wanted. Many people try a range of at-home products and had varying degrees of success, but there are several reasons why they’ll never be as good as a professional, in-office treatment.

Comparing At-Home and In-Office Products

While many of the products you can buy over the counter are effective, they usually work best with stains that are just on the surface of the teeth. There’s a simple reason for this: if these products used bleaching or cleaning agents that were any more powerful, they could potentially damage your teeth or soft tissues if they’re incorrectly applied.

In-office treatments usually take less than an hour to complete, and the results are far more predictable than home products can provide. Some of the other differences between home and office treatments include:

  • Stronger whitening agents – We know how to carefully apply the whitening treatment, which means that we can safely use more powerful agents that have a more noticeable effect.
  • Safe applications – Because we can control exactly where the treatment is applied, we can ensure that it won’t irritate your gums or soft tissues in the mouth.
  • Lasting results – A single treatment can last up to a year or more if you carefully maintain it.
  • Immediate results – As we mentioned earlier, this one-hour investment of time can result in teeth that are eight shades brighter.

How It Works

There’s a difference between bleaching and abrasion whitening. Where bleaching physically changes the color of your teeth, abrasion whitening uses physical or chemical actions that remove surface stains.

The active ingredient in most bleaching solutions is either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide in different concentrations. It can range anywhere from 10% to 22%, which can get deeper down into the tooth and remove stains on the top and beneath the surface.

In-office solutions are different from at-home products because they use a light-activated procedure. We can apply the whitening agent and immediately activate it with the light, which leads to the results you expect. However, there are other options, like custom mouthpieces and gel solutions that can produce quality results, too.

Keeping Your Smile Longer

These teeth whitening solutions are made to last for around a year, but the exact length of time will depend on how your treat your smile during that time.

One way or another, the foods and drinks that we love tend to discolor our teeth. Some of the worst offenders include red wine, coffee, tea, soft drinks, and sports drinks. On top of that, simple age contributes to dulling our teeth. If you want to maintain your new smile for as long as possible, consider a few of the following suggestions.

  • Avoid the foods and drinks that stain your teeth the most. If you have to have them, brush or rinse as soon as you can.
  • Use home treatments to supplement the office treatment. They can help remove light, surface stains.
  • Use a straw with those drinks that do a lot of damage to your teeth.
  • Step up your oral hygiene habits.
  • Keep your regular dental appointments. We’ll be able to analyze the progress of any discoloration and know when to recommend any touchups.

Teeth whitening is a well-established, well-tested procedure that delivers great results. Don’t wait to get the smile you’ve always wanted.

Is IV Sedation Right for You?

IV DripA lot of people experience some kind of anxiety over visiting the dentist. While one person might just feel a slight aversion to needles, other people end up avoiding the dentist altogether and fail to get the care that they need. Sedation dentistry is an effective way to help patients overcome these anxieties and have a more relaxed and effective treatment.

There are several forms of sedation available, and each one has its own benefits. Depending on your personal situations, patients may receive oral sedation, nitrous oxide, or general anesthesia. One option that has a lot of potential benefits – especially for those with severe anxieties – is IV sedation.

What is IV Sedation?

In IV sedation, the sedative drug is administered directly into the vein so it can start taking effect immediately. We insert a tiny needle into a vein that is close to the surface of the skin in the arm or the back of the hand.

The major benefit for us is that we can precisely control the level of sedation and adjust it on the fly if necessary. It allows us to monitor things like oxygen levels, blood pressure, and pulse, and change things as necessary.

The benefits for the patient, on the other hand, include the ability to reach a deeper level of sedation, a diminished gag reflex, and the added safety that comes from the ability to control the dosage.

One thing to understand, though, is that IV sedation is not meant to eliminate pain. It is not a narcotic drug. It is an anti-anxiety sedative which is meant to help you relax, feel sleepy, and produce partial or total amnesia. It is possible to add painkilling effects to the IV, but that will depend on your individual circumstances. Generally, a local anesthetic will be administered. (Which means that if you have a fear of needles, we will wait until the IV starts taking effect to administer the painkiller.)

Finally, while it is possible to put a patient completely asleep with this method, that’s not normally what happens. Generally, the patient is fully awake throughout the procedure, but fully relaxed. This way they can comply with instructions and answer important questions along the way.

However, after the procedure, you won’t have any memory of it. It will be as if you slept through the entire thing. You may remember feeling a little light headed, and then the next thing you know it will be over and it will be time to go home.

What Happens When It’s Over?

After the procedure, you will need to have someone else take you home. It may even be a good idea to have someone around the rest of the day, or at least until you can say that you’re fully alert again.

You should also avoid any strenuous activities and, just to be on the safe side, don’t risk driving at all the rest of the day. Just go home and take it easy for a while. That also means eating light and maybe taking a few sips of Coke if you start feeling a little nauseated.

Is It For You?

There are several types of sedation, and for a lot of patients, oral sedation before the procedure starts is enough to relax and ignore their anxieties.  For others, IV sedation may be the answer. If you really dread visiting the office, give us a call and we’ll determine what kind of sedation will work the best for you.

Safe & Painless New Smiles With Lumineers

Now you can have straight, natural-looking teeth without the discomfort of traditional veneers with a new and advanced procedure called Lumineers.

Lumineers keeps the natural tooth intact. It can correct everything from spaces and gaps to misshaped, chipped, crooked and discolored teeth. It generally takes two office visits and less than two hours of your time to complete.

Dr. Baumann received Lumineers certification in March 2008.

He is pleased to offer this service and said one of his “top priorities has always been patient ease and comfort.”

“Any time I discover new and improved technology for dental services, I research it. I discovered this technique is just as effective as traditional veneers but quicker, not as invasive, and painless,” he said.

The technique offers veneers without shots, drilling or discomfort. It covers teeth with a new material called Cerinate porcelain, which is thinner but stronger than traditional porcelain veneers. Since it’s thin, the material closely resembles natural teeth. Existing teeth don’t have to be shaved in preparation for application, which can lead to tooth sensitivity.

“Lumineers is a comfortable dental service. It’s another way for us to give people amazing smiles that boost their self-confidence,” Dr. Baumann said.

Lumineers is a technique that cannot be used on every patient; for that reason, we continue to offer traditional veneers. Drs. Baumann, Lanman and Haller invite you to come in to discuss all of the possibilities to enhance your smile, including the new and exciting technology of Lumineers.
